ALEXANDRIA, VA (PRWEB) OCTOBER 19, 2010 - The American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation's preeminent professional statistical society, will participate in a two-day expo on the National Mall October 23--24 as part of the inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival. The ASA's booth will feature the grand-prize winner of the competition it held earlier this year to select hands-on activities for the event. ASA is an official partner of the festival.

The grand prize entry was submitted by Ellen Gundlach, Purdue University, for her project on parachute design and testing. Gundlach won $750 and a trip for two to Washington, DC, and will be present in the booth during the expo. Her hands-on activity will be the main focus of the ASA exhibit, Discovery through Interactive Statistics, which also will feature a capture-recapture activity where students estimate the number of fish in a pond. ASA will provide some data visualization activities as well as information on careers in statistics, including a video on careers in biopharmaceutical statistics. The ASA booth can be found in Section PA-13, Booth Number 1267. Members from the ASA and Washington Statistical Society, the largest chapter of the ASA, will volunteer time in the booth to coordinate the activities and interact with students.

I hear their booth also features a shooting gallery. If you hit exactly the same distance to the right and to the left of the target, you are awarded a bulls-eye!
