Deep Throat and Hypocrisy

I know that pointing out hypocrisy in politics is a bit like pointing out inconsistencies in movie plots. It's probably not sound sport, and it's entirely too easy most of the time. But sometimes you just have to laugh at how brazen someone can be at the pot and kettle game, and the recent revelation of the identity of Deep Throat was a great example. Watching Nixon's henchmen come out of the woodwork to declare their moral indignation at the ethical lapses of Mark Felt was tantamount to watching Liza Minelli criticize someone else for being an an unstable boozehound. Gentlemen, do you not own a mirror? You gotta hand it to Chuck Colson and G. Gordon Liddy - they've got cojones.

I'm told I went out last night and that many beers were consumed, but I have no memory of the event. Why does too much hooch make us forget? And does the fact that I "blacked out" mean I should reserve a place in rehab? Sincerely, Chastened Boozehound

The criticism from the Nixon Excons is laughable. They were happy to trample on the Constitution in their exercise of raw power. They got caught, and went to Jail, maybe they should have been executed for treason. They have no claim to Moral Indignation. Mark Felt apparently didnt profit from his actions, so will give him the benefit of the doubt, and say his concern for the country's welfare was his motivation. I certainly hope Mr. Felt sells the rights to his story for a very large sum of money.

This regarding Felt is funny. It's obvious that Felt was nothing more than a maiden scorned. He was second (or third) to Hoover at the FBI and he wanted to be appointed chief after the loathsome Hoover finally left the office by dying. Felt was a maiden scorned (by Nixon) and he got back at the scorner big time.

Felt isn't a hero. He went along with Hoover for decades. He went along to go along. Like a typical burocrat. But he engaged in a strategy that helped bring down his brought down the guy that scorned him. That is the interesting aspect of the case. Whether or not the guy that scorned him (Nixon) should have been brought down is a completely separate issue.
