I mentioned a few months ago that Socks was in end stage cancer. It ended today. R.I.P. Socks.

My baymate and I started a little discussion about lab fashion. Why? Well I'm a pretty ardent wearer of sandals, I'll wear them until late fall if I have to. I'll wear them with jeans too. But under no circumstances will I wear sandals with socks.
The other myth the MythBusters looked at last week was the phrase "knock your socks off" (along with the dropping and shooting a bullet myth). But before that, let me complain.
New Scientist has an article on sock puppets (subscription required):
Taking a break from the science-y books and from the donor requests, this week Minnow and I want to share on
That's sweet you to post this. Who doesn't remember Socks? He will be missed.
That's a pretty long life for a cat. I hope it was a good one.
I have all of my Socks Memorabilia, which I will say a prayer over today in memory of Socks, and for his safe arrival to the Other Side.
Cat astrophe.
I wonder if anyone has tried to figure out changes in life expectancy for pet cats and dogs over the last 100 years, or longer. Odysseus' dog lived 20+ years; our two golden retrievers died in the early 80s aged 10 and 12. And with that, I am out of data.
In general larger species live longer than smaller ones, with a lot of exceptions. Horses are smaller than cows by a bit, but live longer by about ten years.
But larger members of a given species tend to die younger. At least among domesticated animals. The largest breeds of dogs may last ten years. Smaller breeds can last fifteen to twenty.
20 years is long for any dog or cat.
Humans live a long long time, especially for our body size compared to other mammals. You have to get up to elephants before any others come close.
Kind of getting off track, I guess. Hope Socks had a good one.
I always kept up with Socks and was in his fan club. Really liked him. May God bless his soul and may he rest in peace.
