OCEANS 21

Have you heard of OCEANS-21 (H.R. 21) The Oceans Conservation, Education, and National Strategy for the 21st Century Act?

i-bd96500d65f340cf65c589ea09e2d621-7114933.jpgRep. Sam Farr introduced this Big Oceans Bill in January aka the 'ocean health' bill. With 50 cosponsors, it's building momentum in the House and over 20 members have signed on in just the last 6 weeks.

For those outside the political tinderbox, what does this mean? OCEANS-21 would become the first national oceans policy if passed. It would strengthen NOAA, promote ecosystem-based management, enhance education, information collection, and citizen involvement, and establish an Oceans and Great Lakes Conservation Trust Fund. Good stuff!

Of course, as we all recognize, it's difficult to predict what will happen. But just think.. the folks who make decisions are thinking and talking ocean policy.. and it's about time. After all, we are more literally planet ocean than planet earth.

Often unwatched by all but policy-wonks yet key to determining policies put forth by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are the EPA’s Scientific Advisory Boards. These boards consult with the EPA on the science that influences regulations, particularly on individual chemicals – science…
I guess we should be glad that Senator Clinton has a plan to end the Republican War on Science. It needs to be done and she is right to do this, but it's sort of like getting excited that someone boldly supports the notion that 2 + 2 = 4. Clinton announced yesterday that: Hillary will restore the…
You may remember when I wrote this recently (check out the useful links within): The Conyers bill (a.k.a. Fair Copyright in Research Works Act, HR 801), is back. Despite all the debunking it got last time around, and despite the country having more important problems to deal with right now, this…
You probably remember the wonderful new NIH law that passed last year: On Dec 26th, 2007, President Bush signed the Bill that requires all NIH-funded research to be made available to the public. The bill mandates all NIH-funded research to be made freely available to public within 12 months of…

We need an 'Ocean 21' movie with Clooney et al. Pronto!

Hey, hate to be off topic but....whose picture is that off on the left sidebar? Might it be Sheril? And at this rate, how long can it be until she is actually blogging under her own name?

Sheril - I like the picture!

Does Oceans-21 say anything about the freshwater "oceans" (you know, the sweetwater seas of the Great Lakes)?

Well Coturnix,

So far Clooney appears in these movies every three years and he's now 46..

If my math is right, we should expect 'Oceans 21' in 2031 finding the famed bachelor at 70 years old. Given Sean Connery is still a leading man at nearly 77, there's a good probability he'll be able to carry off the role of Danny Ocean.

And indeed H.R. 21 is really known as OCEANS 21. I certainly hope we see it move before the movie comes out.

So, we should re-issue a dyslexic version of Oceans 12! Voila!
