So, there's a new issue of Physics World magazine out, with a bunch of feature stories on the Large Hadron Collider. Three of these are available free online:
- Life at the high-energy frontier, a sort of overview of the accelerator and the people involved.
- Expedition to inner space, a discussion of what they hope to discover at the LHC.
- How the US sees the LHC, which is obvious.
I'm particularly interested in one of the articles that isn't free online, though: "Beyond the Higgs" discussing what would happen if the LHC fails to find the Higgs boson. My interest stems from the fact that the author emailed me a few questions based on an old blog post. I doubt very much that I'm quoted, or anything like that, but I'm very interested to hear what the article has to say.
If anyone has access to the full text, and can let me know what it says, I'd appreciate it. I'll post what I wrote in response to those questions later on.

So, I was thinking, where are the cold alien intelligences who ought to be out there, studying us dispassionately, as if we were microbes...?
Well, what if we accidentally killed them all?
No, really.
Back in late July, I got email from a writer for Physics World magazine (which is sort of the UK equivalent of Physics Today), asking my opinion on a few questions relating to particle physics funding.
Hector writes in and asks about someone from Sheffield in the UK who says that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will create Dark Matter:
LHC Shows the Way workshop: general colloquium reviewing the LHC and the Higgs discovery.
Kyle Cramner from NYU: "We discovered the goddamned particle"
More slow live blog.
Cute opening video of LHC construction.
Chad - I work for PW, so I'll mention to Edwin that you'd like to see a copy of his article. I think it was probably me that pointed out your blog post to him actually :)
Thanks for these links - they look like keepers for my "Quantum Physics for Poets" class in th Spring. It's depressing though... it's been so long since I've done any real particle physics, I found myself reading one of the articles thinking... "Hmmm... is that what the hierarchy problem is? I thought the hierarchy problem was something else."
