As many educators know, the elementary and middle school years are critical periods in which students' interest in science can "wither on the vine" if efforts are not made early to engage young learners in such subjects in exciting and creative ways. This is why global biotech leader Life Technologies -- as it prepares to return as a major Sponsor of the USA Science & Engineering Festival next spring.-- will devote a major portion of its outreach exhibits at the finale Expo to wowing elementary and middle school students through a wide range of interactive science activities. "We know…

As a founder and organizer of the upcoming inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival, I'm in frequent contact with a wide range of teachers, students, innovators, community leaders, entrepreneurs and decision makers in science and technology across the country. One thing that I continue to learn from these experiences: There is a growing need out there, even a grassroots desire, among average Americans to understand and connect in meaningful ways with the vast array of science and technology impacting their lives today -- provided that this information is presented to them through…
The Guardian Science Blog has published my article on the rather excellent Guerilla Science organisation. I discovered them last year when they invited me to talk at the Secret Garden Party. I'm happy to say I'll be returning this year, and I implore you all to get involved in this kind of thing (if only for the free entry to festivals): Of the thousands heading to Suffolk this weekend for the Latitude Festival, most will be looking forward to a few days of music, camping and socially acceptable breakfast drinking. One thing they're probably not expecting is a lecture on astrophysics. But…
