The Viking and I ventured out early this morning to get the H1N1 vaccine and found long lines in the tony neighborhoods. SF Gate reports that the Marin public vaccination clinic was swamped. (The irony!--Marin is a hotbed of the anti-vaccination movement.) So where can you get the vaccine quickly? Downtown! We were in and out in less than an hour! There's almost no one there.

There's no vaccine for the influenza subtype, H5N1, of most concern as the agent of the next pandemic but evidence exists that there is some cross-reactivity with existing seasonal vaccines (it's not clear how much if any, but it might not take much) or that previous vaccination with seasonal vac
There's been a bit of bad news on the vaccination front:
The CDC has declared this week to be National Influenza Vaccination Week, and is working to raise awareness about the seriousness of influenza and the importance of vaccination.
Same is the case in Washington DC. 3 hour waits in the Upper NW rich areas and walkin, get shot, no wait clinics in the poorer parts of DC.
A lot of people are probably too busy working 2 jobs.
I got the shot for my daughter in a West Philly clinic (after calling around everywhere in the suburbs where we live, as well as the County and the State!). We were in and out in 20 minutes. And it was free!
I find it to still be true today. The under developed areas there is less of a push to get the vaccine.
