Seventeen is the Mystical Number

Cognitive Daily proves it scientifically.

I love it when life imitates Brust.

More like this

"There are times when life imitates art. Then there are times when life imitates science fiction," the Loom's Carl Zimmer writes in todays' The New York Times article on the jaws of moray eels. And there are times when the jaws that belong to that life latch down on your left ring finger and you…
There's no denying that sex is important for most creatures biologically. For humans, the biological imperative of sex has seeped into our psyches over thousands of years worth of evolution, making it more essential than we realize. On The Frontal Cortex, Jonah Lehrer reports on a new column in…
(Alternate Title: "Epic Fantasy Is What We Point to When We Look Down on Epic Fantasy.") I've been on a bit of an epic fantasy kick lately, evidently due to the thousand-ish pages of The Crippled God not being enough. This means that I was in a weirdly appropriate mental space to catch the recent…

Mystical? I haven't heard any claim that the popularity of 7 bypasses our brain. Carl Jung believed tetrologies like 4 Greek elements and such reflected a bias in our collective unconscious toward 4, maybe because we're so used to making our way across a plane in our bilaterally symmetric bodies, but he wasn't big on other numbers. Not a craps player, I guess.

So what is it about 7? Is it because 29.5 days in a month divided into 4 parts is close to 7? It would have been too odd for our collective unconscious to divide that as 5 X 6. Is every other affection for 7 due to that, apart from craps players? When do we get to know about these parallel universes to see if they develop the same cultural patterns? Or maybe other intelligent life in this universe would do the trick. Sadly, not in my lifetime.

Personally, I never would pick 17. It's my ex-wife's bithday. Not a chance. Not only is there always one non-mystical reason for anything, there are lots of reasons, some more universal than others.
